How to Help

Riverwood is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable corporation that is governed by a volunteer board of directors. All Riverwood students are charged a fee for lessons that is discounted in order to make therapeutic riding affordable for our families. The fees charged only cover 30% of our operating costs. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available.
In order to meet our operating budget, fundraising events, gifts, grants, special events and donations have to account for 70% of our income. You will find some giving opportunities listed below. Please contact us for any questions you may have about ways you can support Riverwood. Donations are vital to our success, and every dollar counts! We are truly grateful for the support of the entire Riverwood family!

Bricks of Love Program

Riverwood was built by “bricks of love” through the help and support of our local community and donors like you. Now, you can purchase a brick paver to be laid on the floor of Riverwood’s indoor facility. Click here for a picture. Purchase a paver for $75 and include what you wish for us to write. You can commemorate the loss of a loved one, beloved horse or pet, or simply show your support for the riders and horses at Riverwood by helping us “brick-by-brick.”

Employee Matching Programs

If you already contribute to Riverwood, or plan to do so, please check to see if your employer will match your contribution! Many employers will and we appreciate your support!

Gifts of Stock and Bonds

Gifts of stock and bonds can be very advantageous ways of giving. If you have owned stock that has increased in value for more than one year, you can donate it to Riverwood and receive a tax-deduction equal to the fair market value of the stock at the time of the transfer and never pay capital gains tax on the appreciated value of the stock.

Giving from IRA Accounts

If you are age 70 ½ or older, you can give your required minimum distribution (or any amount up to $100,000) from your IRA as a tax-free rollover gift. At your request, your IRA will send a charitable gift directly to Riverwood, and you do not have to report the withdrawal as taxable income. This only applies to IRA accounts; for those who have retirement funds in a 401(k), 403(b), SEP-IRA, or SIMPLE IRA, you can rollover dollars from those accounts to a standard IRA and then make the charitable gift to Riverwood to receive the same tax-benefit.

Include Riverwood in Your Will or Trust

A gift to Riverwood through your estate and financial planning is a wonderful way to help ensure Riverwood’s programs can continue to make an impact in our community well into the future! Bequests are an easy way to include Riverwood in your estate plan and they are not subject to estate tax. Bequests can be designated for general support or for a specific purpose. Simply name Riverwood as a beneficiary as you prepare your will or living trust. If you already have a will or living trust, you may add Riverwood as a beneficiary through an amendment. There are several benefits of planning a gift to Riverwood through your will or trust: your assets remain in your control during your lifetime, you can modify your bequest to address changing circumstances, and under current tax law there is no upper limit on the estate tax deduction for your charitable bequests.
Is Riverwood already included in your will or trust? Please let us know! We are thankful for your dedication to serving Riverwood’s mission well into the future and would love for you to notify us of your decision so we can ensure your wishes are honored!
